Blistering heatwave hits Cyprus

Newsroom

The Meteorological Service of Cyprus has issued a warning for an impending heatwave, with temperatures soaring up to 42 degrees Celsius on Friday. According to the announcement, the danger level is in the "yellow," indicating potentially hazardous conditions from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Friday. Inland areas are expected to reach around 42 degrees Celsius, while higher mountain regions may see temperatures around 33 degrees Celsius.

The current weather pattern is influenced by seasonal low pressure and warm air masses.

Today, the weather will quickly become clear and hot, with occasional thin dust in the air. The winds will start as light and variable, around 3 Beaufort, and gradually become mainly from the southwest to northwest, weak to moderate, reaching 3 to 4 Beaufort. In the afternoon, there might be locally strong winds of 4 to 5 Beaufort in the southern coastal areas. The sea will be slightly rough. The temperature will rise to about 42 degrees Celsius in inland areas, around 35 degrees Celsius on the southern and eastern coasts, approximately 37 degrees Celsius on the northern coasts, and about 33 degrees Celsius on the western coasts and higher mountain areas.

Tonight, the weather will be mainly clear, but later, some local low clouds and sparse fog may appear. The winds will initially be weak from the southwest to northwest, around 3 Beaufort, locally reaching 3 to 4 Beaufort. Later, they will become light and variable, around 3 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough. The temperature will drop to about 23 degrees Celsius inland and along the rest of the coasts, and around 21 degrees Celsius in the higher mountain regions.

On Saturday, the weather will be mainly clear. On Sunday, during the midday hours, developing clouds are expected to bring isolated showers and occasional thunderstorms in the mountainous areas. On Monday, the weather will be mainly clear.

The temperature will decrease on Saturday and remain relatively stable until Monday, hovering slightly above the average climatic values.

Cyprus braces for scorching temperatures as the Meteorological Service issues a heatwave warning. On Friday, July 28th, temperatures are predicted to soar up to 42 degrees Celsius, raising concerns about potential health risks and safety precautions for residents and visitors.

The "yellow" warning, indicating hazardous conditions, will be in effect from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, urging people to stay vigilant and take necessary measures to cope with the extreme heat. Inland areas are expected to be hit the hardest, experiencing temperatures around 42 degrees Celsius, while the higher mountain regions may witness mercury rising to about 33 degrees Celsius.

The current weather pattern, influenced by seasonal low pressure and warm air masses, will lead to rapid heating during the day. A combination of clear skies and occasional thin dust in the atmosphere will add to the intensity of the heatwave.

Residents and tourists are advised to stay indoors during peak hours and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities to prevent heat-related illnesses. It is crucial to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to remain as comfortable as possible.

The winds are expected to be light and variable during the day, providing little relief from the blistering heat. In the afternoon, coastal areas might experience locally strong winds, reaching 4 to 5 Beaufort.

As the heatwave continues into the night, temperatures are anticipated to remain high, with inland areas and coastal regions experiencing around 23 degrees Celsius and mountainous areas at approximately 21 degrees Celsius. Some local low clouds and sparse fog may offer slight respite from the day's heat.

Looking ahead, the weekend will see mainly clear weather, but on Sunday, isolated showers and occasional thunderstorms may occur in the mountainous areas during the midday hours. On Monday, clear skies will return.

Authorities urge the public to stay informed about weather updates and follow safety guidelines during this extreme heat event. By staying cautious and prepared, everyone can navigate through this intense heatwave with care and well-being.
