The Republic of Cyprus has lodged an official complaint with both the United Nations and the European Union in response to remarks made by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which implied potential recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island.
During a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on February 13, Sharif declared that "Pakistan fully supports the cause of the so-called ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ and fully stands by Turkey on this cause in an unwavering fashion."
The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned these statements as "unacceptable" and emphasized that the diplomatic protest was necessary given the absence of formal diplomatic relations between Nicosia and Islamabad.
The ministry also urged the international community to take preventive measures to block any attempt to recognize the illegal entity, warning that such actions would violate international law and further undermine efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.
