In response to an amber warning for extremely high temperatures, the Department of Labour Inspections in Cyprus has enforced a ban on outdoor work in higher mountainous areas between 12:00 and 16:00 local time on Thursday. This directive applies specifically to areas situated at elevations ranging from 1150 to 1650 meters.
The prohibition encompasses a range of activities including heavy and moderate outdoor labor, transportation and delivery tasks, jobs that involve operating bikes, bicycles, or scooters, as well as roles like couriers and food delivery personnel.
To combat the risk of heat-related ailments, the Department of Labour Inspections strongly advises employers and self-employed individuals to adopt precautionary measures. These measures include providing regular breaks, encouraging rest in shaded or air-conditioned spaces, and considering employee rotations if feasible.
Additionally, the Department emphasizes the importance of having cool, potable water accessible at all times. Adequate head coverings are also recommended for employees, who are encouraged to opt for loose clothing made of breathable materials like cotton. To further prevent heat-related issues, the advisory suggests avoiding heavy meals with excessive sugar, as well as reducing consumption of caffeine and alcohol.
