Cyprus is launching a pilot program in schools aimed at promoting cultural literacy among students, officials announced Thursday in Nicosia. Education Minister Athina Michaelidou and Deputy Minister of Culture Vasiliki Kassianidou introduced the "Schools as Ambassadors of Culture - Students as Ambassadors of Citizenship" initiative, which will roll out in 15 schools across all educational levels this academic year.

The initiative, led by the Deputy Ministry of Culture with a budget of €40,000, seeks to immerse students in Cyprus's rich cultural heritage, from its monuments and traditions to its modern artistic expressions. The program will also encourage collaboration between schools and local artists, aiming to enhance critical thinking and emotional development through arts education.

Michaelidou emphasized the program's goal of shaping informed, culturally aware citizens who understand their heritage. She highlighted that students would engage with Cyprus's culture through hands-on activities, helping them develop a deeper understanding of their identity and the broader world.

Kassianidou noted that the program is part of the government’s broader efforts to integrate cultural education into the school curriculum, with plans for its evaluation and possible expansion. Each participating school will receive a grant of €2,000 for cultural activities, with additional funds for visits to cultural sites. The initiative will culminate in a student conference at the end of the year, where participating schools will present their projects.

The program reflects the government's commitment to promoting cultural literacy as a lifelong learning skill, aligning with its policy goals under President Nikos Christodoulides.
