President Christodoulides talks electricity link with Saudi FM

Nikos Christodoulides discusses energy links and regional security with Saudi Foreign Minister at UN General Assembly

Newsroom

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides met with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on Tuesday during the United Nations General Assembly to discuss a potential electricity connection between Saudi Arabia and Cyprus.

The talks covered important topics, including the security situation in the Middle East and ways to improve relations between Cyprus and Saudi Arabia. This meeting is significant as Saudi Arabia becomes the third Arab country, after the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, to express interest in the electricity project, which aims to boost energy cooperation and create a stable power supply for both nations.

Along with energy discussions, Christodoulides and Al Saud also talked about the ongoing Cyprus issue, which has left the island divided since Turkey's invasion in 1974. Despite several attempts at negotiations, including the latest talks in Switzerland in 2017, a solution to reunite the island has not yet been reached.

This meeting highlights Cyprus’s efforts to strengthen ties with regional partners while seeking solutions to long-standing problems.
