Nicosia police detain young woman following fatal road accident in Strovolos

A local woman was killed in a road accident on Thursday as she was crossing the road in Strovolos.

According to police, 66-year-old Anna Nicolaou from Strovolos was on foot Thursday evening, around 9pm, when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle as she was attempting to cross Eracleous Street.

Nicolaou was rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced her dead on arrival.

The car driver, a 20-year-old female, was detained for questioning on Friday early morning, around 1:30am. An official police statement said an arrest warrant had been issued following the incident.

Police also said there were two female passengers in the vehicle at the time of the incident, aged 21 and 22, while reports said none of the young women were injured.

The young women were heading north towards Tseriou Avenue when the accident occured.
