In a recent ruling, the Larnaca District Court sentenced a 44-year-old man to eight months in jail for assaulting a 29-year-old woman from Congo who was holding her infant last July.

The police confirmed that the 44-year-old man was found guilty on four charges: assault causing actual bodily harm to the woman, racism and xenophobia, public insult, and possession of an offensive instrument.

The incident took place around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Prompted by a tip-off, police patrols arrived at the scene where they noticed a gathering of people.

Around the same time, the woman with her infant approached the Larnaca Police Department to report the assault she had endured at that location.

According to the complainant's account, she had visited the man's house to request a refund for a defective car she had purchased from him. The man came down from the apartment building where he lived in the Larnaca harbor area. After insulting her, he kicked her in the back and punched her while she held her infant.

Following police instructions, the woman sought medical attention at Famagusta General Hospital, as she resided in that area. A doctor's examination revealed bruises on various parts of her body. After receiving treatment, she was discharged.

Upon realizing that he was being sought by the police, the 44-year-old suspect voluntarily turned himself in at the Larnaca police station, where he made certain allegations.

Specifically, he explained to the police that he had sold a car to the woman in question. During their meeting, she requested a refund, claiming that the vehicle had exhibited some damage. The suspect stated in his testimony that he would refund the money once she returned the car.

It is important to note that the suspect denied all ten charges brought against him by the prosecution.
