Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides acknowledged on Tuesday evening that the state has not done enough for the sports and culture sectors over the years, pledging that decisions will be taken to set up the infrastructure for Cypriot athletes. Τhe President delivered a speech during an event that took place at the Presidential Palace for the athletes that will participate in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.
The President said that Cyprus, as an EU member state cannot be proud that is doing what is supposed to regarding the infrastructure, adding that many athletes have to go abroad to prepare for the games.
He referred to the spirit of the Olympic Games and the principles and values of fair play, excellence and noble competition adding that these are the values our athletes serve.
He also said that all sportsmen and sportswomen are the government’s most valuable partners in the great effort to upgrade the sports in our country. The President praised all athletes for their hard work and sacrifices and added that he will be in Paris to greet them at the Olympic village.
Head of Cyprus Sports Organization Yiannis Ioannou said that the Olympic Games are the most important sporting event which promotes the noble rivalry and fair competition. He praised the Cyprus athletes who will take part in the Games in Paris adding that they must be proud of themselves. Ioannou also said that it is important to found a Deputy Ministry of Sports.
The Organization’s Vice President Kalli Hadjiosif referred to the decision to publish two photo albums that outline the sports Olympic history in Cyprus. This is a journey, she said, of Cyprus’ participation in the Olympics through the years.
Greek athlete Voula Patoulidou, who won gold medal in the Barcelona 1992 Olympics said that all athletes should keep the power of resistance in their souls and hearts.
Paralympian Maria Markou thanked the State for its support and expressed hope that all athletes will be able to give their best.
Silver medalist in 2012 London games, Pavlos Kontides, urged the State to make constructive use of the knowledge and experiences of Cypriot athletes who soon will complete their careers, for the benefit of the younger athletes.
