Turkish Cypriot groups challenge Tatar's solution proposals

21 organizations are urging the UN to take action for the island's future

Twenty-one Turkish Cypriot guilds, organizations, and political parties have collectively appealed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, emphasizing their ongoing commitment to achieving peace and a solution in Cyprus. They assert that the proposals of Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar do not represent the true will of the Turkish Cypriot community.

According to the "Press and Information Office", Yeni Duzen reports that the letter welcomes the extension of Cuellar's term and underscores the necessity of continuing negotiations.

"We, the trade unions, political parties, and non-governmental organizations active in the northern part of Cyprus, would like to convey to you in this letter that what Ersin Tatar, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, has proposed does not reflect the real will of the Turkish Cypriots," the letter states.

The groups advocate for a federal solution and peace on the island, criticizing Tatar for not representing their views and condemning the status quo that benefits a select few. They pledge to continue their struggle until a resolution and peace are achieved.

The letter highlights the significant burden the ongoing Cyprus problem places on the Turkish Cypriot community, which has faced international isolation for years.

"Turkish Cypriots, who have been excluded from international law for years, are struggling to exist in isolation," the letter notes.

It concludes by stating that the majority in both communities believe the UN's 6-point framework from Crans-Montana remains a realistic path to a comprehensive solution. It calls for a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, based on UN resolutions, as the way forward.
