Members of the once thriving Greek community of Alexandria, of Greek and Greek Cypriot descent, will return once more to the city they grew up to attend a ceremony on 1 May in the Library of Alexandria, in the presence of the Presidents of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt.
The event is part of the program “Nostos, the Return” in the framework of the trilateral cooperation between Nicosia, Athens and Cairo on diaspora matters.
Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou said the event is under the aegis of the President Nicos Anastasiades, the President of Egypt Abdel Fatah al Sisi and the President of Greece Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
The three leaders will meet for dinner on April 30 and attend the ceremony the next day, 1 May, at the Library of Alexandria. There, they will address Alexandrians of Greek and Greek Cypriot origin, who had to leave the country, particularly after the Egyptian revolution of 1952.
Photiou said there is great interest among members of the former community to attend the event. These are mostly elderly people that now live in Cyprus and Greece and will be accompanied by their relatives. They will stay in Egypt for a week and will visit various sites, also in Cairo.
