24-year-old woman escapes kidnapping attempt in Paphos

Police take action against gender-based violence

Newsroom / CNA

On Monday, the Paphos Police arrested someone for allegedly sexually assaulting a 24-year-old woman in Paphos. The complaint states that the accused kept her against her will, trying to make her enter into a romantic relationship with him.

According to the spokesperson for the Paphos Municipal Police, Michalis Nikolaou, on July 26th, around midnight, the 24-year-old resident of Paphos reported that someone known to her, with whom she had a friendly relationship, forcibly placed her in his car on two occasions. He then took her to his home, where he restricted her movements. The complainant said this happened because the person had feelings for her, and she didn't reciprocate those feelings.

Mr. Nikolaou explained that the 24-year-old informed the police that during these two incidents, which occurred on July 20th and 24th, she didn't experience any sexual abuse but was kept against her will as he tried to convince her to be in a romantic relationship with him.

The complainant also mentioned that her alleged perpetrator took her mobile phone to prevent her from seeking help.

In both instances, the 24-year-old managed to escape from him. An arrest warrant was issued for the suspect, and he was apprehended on Monday afternoon.

The alleged perpetrator is facing charges of robbery, sexual assault, and psychological and physical violence against women.

The investigations are being conducted by the Paphos Municipal Police Department.
