Following a proposal by MPs Charalambos Pazarou, Efthymios Diplarou, and Savia Orphanidou, the Parliamentary Health Committee today discussed the inclusion of medicines for the treatment of menopause symptoms in the General Health Insurance System (GESY) as well as the implementation of a menopause information campaign.

The debate, which began today, is expected to continue in future meetings to determine how and which drugs can be included in GESY. Concerning the information campaign, DISY MP Charalambos Pazaros stated that stakeholders are optimistic.

Pazaros observed that the onset of menopause, even if not premature, occurs at ages when women are still productive, but its symptoms disrupt their normal lives.

"It is recommended to take certain natural medicines or hormone restoration drugs to prevent the risk of health problems, but also to mitigate the symptoms it causes to a woman's health," Pazaros explained, adding that because there is a defined legal framework for the drugs included in GESY, the opinion of the Pancyprian Gynecological Obstetric Society will be sought as to whether natural treatments can be included.

Concerning the information campaign, the MP stated that it would assist women in accepting menopause as a normal stage of their cycle and adopting a more positive attitude toward the distressing psychosomatic symptoms it brings.

"DISY wants every woman to enjoy the quality of life she deserves and certainly every woman has the right to enjoy her life without the psychosomatic symptoms that menopause causes, so we support the inclusion of any medication that will help women in the stages of menopause," he concluded.
