A trade school student in Larnaca has been admitted to a mental health hospital after exchanging blows with another teen and two teachers who tried to break the fight.

According to police, two students aged 18 and 17 got into a fight at a state vocational school in Larnaca, Saint Lazarus Technical School, on Tuesday shortly after 1pm.

When the younger student called for help, a teacher intervened with the older student attacking them both. A second teacher tried to intervene but also got attacked by the 18-year-old.

Union teachers were scheduled to hold a one-hour work stoppage on Wednesday to protest against violence in schools

The 17-year-old student was rushed to the Emergency Room at Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors said he suffered a mild concussion and was admitted to hospital as a precaution.

The two teachers also sustained injuries. One of them was taken to a private clinic after suffering a broken nose and a head injury, while the other was bruised badly and drove himself to a different private clinic.

The assailant, who reportedly went haywire following the incident, was arrested by police who drove him to Larnaca General Hospital. A state psychologist carried out an evaluation and ordered the teen transferred to Nicosia’s Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital.

Members of teacher unions OLTEK and OELMEK were scheduled to hold a one-hour work stoppage on Wednesday during fifth period to protest against violence in schools.
