A Russian woman died in hospital on Saturday morning following a fall from an apartment balcony after a night out in Paphos.

According to local media, a 43-year-old Russian woman described as a permanent resident in Cyprus had gone out Friday for a night on the town when she returned to the residence of her boyfriend on Skopelou Street around 1am.

Reports said the woman went out on the balcony to get some fresh air when she fell from the third floor and was critically injured.

The woman’s male partner reportedly told authorities the two had been drinking during the night, but information not confirmed by police

An ambulance rushed the woman to the Emergency Room at Paphos General Hospital, where doctors on duty admitted her to the Intensive Care Unit. Reports said she had suffered multiple fractures and internal bleeding, while she underwent emergency surgery but succumbed to her injuries hours later just before noon.

Local media said the woman’s male partner reportedly told police that the two had been drinking during the night. But police told Knews they could not confirm additional details beyond the woman involved in the incident.

Based on preliminary findings, a section of the exterior parapet of the balcony was said to have collapsed, while it was not immediately clear whether the failing barrier preceded the fall or broke off after the woman had fallen off.

Local media said the height of the balcony was estimated at about nine metres while the height of the protective barrier was not immediately known.

Police are investigating the incident.
