Cyprus tightens immigration rules with new law changes

Revised ''prohibited immigrant'' definition sparks concerns over stricter entry controls and family reunification processes.

In a unanimous decision, the Cyprus House of Representatives has approved an update to the country’s Aliens and Immigration Law, bringing in new changes that aim to modernize the immigration system and align it with the recently created State Ministry of Immigration and International Protection.

The amendment passed with 40 votes in favor and introduces several important updates. One major change is the revision of who is considered a “prohibited immigrant.” This means certain individuals will now be banned from entering or staying in Cyprus, tightening immigration controls.

The new law also gives the Cabinet or the Deputy Minister of Immigration the power to delegate specific responsibilities to the Director of the Department of Immigration or other officials within the department. This flexibility is designed to improve how immigration matters are handled, with the option for exceptions and conditions in certain cases.

Another significant change is related to family reunification. The law now specifies the process for applying for entry and residence permits for family members. It also clarifies the fees that need to be paid for these applications, with the Council of Ministers responsible for setting those fees. This same approach applies to permits for seasonal work, intra-company transfers, and long-term mobility.

Finally, the amendment tweaks some existing terms and introduces new ones to make the law easier to follow and enforce, aiming to streamline the whole immigration process.

These changes are part of a broader effort to make Cyprus’ immigration system more efficient and in line with international standards, while also providing the flexibility needed to address the evolving challenges of immigration in the country.
